Challenges

Government departments are scattered across the web and citizens don't know where to find the information they are after. How do we direct users to the appropriate website quickly?

NSW is a large state with a diverse and segmented audience. How can we personalise the experience for every visitor?

People want to feel like they are part of the decisions being made by the Government. How can we give a voice to the citizens of NSW?

Outcome

By leveraging user-centric principles such as accessibility, localisation and integrated data, we were able to provide a personalized experience for every indiviual. Site visitors can now view live traffic conditions, locate nearby service centres, get in touch with their local government representatives and engage with initiatives relevant to their situation, from any device.

Providing an optimized experience for such a diverse audience can prove to be challenging. Early strategy sessions focused on understanding our users' context and aligning key business objectives with our content strategy.

Allowing our users to access relevant, up-to date information is a the core of the experience. By integrating geo-localisation functionalities into the website header, we hope to reinforce the concept of localized content.

More than 50% of the site's visitors use the search field to find relevant information. By surfacing popular and contextual results within the search flow, we can get users to the information they need quicker, without adding much cognitive load.

In an effort to surface and promote various government services, as well as integrated data systems, we grouped localized content into a page-wide widget.

Year-round, there are great many things happening all across NSW. The opportunity here was to allow users to browse and learn about events based on topics, dates and location.

The main objective of the redesign was to allow users with specific needs to quickly find the information they need. A two-tier page layout helped elevate popular content, and allow quick access to deeper sections of the website, all in one view.

As the lead UI designer, my main responsibility was delivering an extensive style guide to the engineering team. With a concern for accessibility and implementation constraints, I made sure every component was both useful and consistent within the system.
